What It’s Really Like to Be Invited to Fashion Week

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

With New York Fashion Week sadly behind us, I hope it’s safe to say that many of us were absolutely obsessed with what went on. It can’t be just me that was keeping tabs on updates of the new collections and stalking models instagram pages. But what’s it really like to go to fashion week? Is it just as glamorous as we all perceive, or is it a facade? Well, I’ve done my research on the topic and will divulge in the truth behind fashion week. All information will be according to my two favorite YouTubers, BestDressed AKA Ashley and Kelsey Simone.

If I'm being honest, I literally can’t even count the number of times I religiously watched the two fashion Youtubers’ Instagram stories and according to their posts, fashion week LITERALLY lives up to the hype. BestDressed AKA Ashley couldn’t even believe that she was there: “I’m so excited but I don’t think my brain has fully processed that this is my real life and not a simulation,” she says in one of her popular posts.

Kelsey Simone, on the other hand, had a little more experience because this was not her first rodeo. In her Copenhagen Fashion Week video, Simone commented on how much running around she had to do in order to get to all of the shows that she wanted to go to. She even ended up missing a few because they were too close in time and too far in location.

According to an Instagram story by BestDressed AKA Ashley, many of the fashion week attendees borrow clothes from the designers of the shows that they’re invited to, saying “Pretty much everyone wearing designer clothes for NYFW has them on loan from the brand! I got to borrow this outfit to wear to the show but don’t actually own any of it. So never look at any of these pic[ture]s and feel bad if you don’t own designer clothes [because] trust me 99% of the people at fashion week don’t know them either!”

Besides going to the shows, bloggers and influencers spend time in the city exploring and shopping. In both her Copenhagen fashion week video and her New York Fashion Week video, Kelsey Simone received free items from two different vintage consignment stores. Just a perk of being a successful fashion blogger, I guess!

Although fashion week is likely just as glamorous as we perceive, there are definitely things that the public doesn’t get to see. Running around and borrowing clothes are just two of these behind-the-scenes occurrences. Even so, running around and getting to wear expensive and fabulous clothes definitely add to the excitement of fashion for the attendees.
