Period Clothing Just Hits Different

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

Time and time again, we’ve seen trends reemerge as designers become nostalgic for decades past. In recent years, iconic 80’s and 90’s fashion staples were reborn as biker shorts, scrunchies, and Doc Martens were once again brought to the forefront of pop culture. But right along with these trends, period fashion inspiration has also snuck back into our wardrobes. While more subtle, the femininity and intricacy indicative of period fashion has become more and more popular. In our culture of increasing female empowerment, we are finally beginning to realize the strength that lies beneath a supposed dainty (seriously take a shot every time I say “dainty”) exterior,  as femininity is beginning to be redefined in a modern context.

The Peasant Blouse

Nothing speaks to my soul quite like a good peasant blouse. In spite of its name, its dainty, feminine silhouette immediately transforms you into a princess anxiously awaiting word from her betrothed. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Pairing this piece with distressed mom jeans and heeled boots helps to edge up the look. Furthermore, this juxtaposition of the sweet, dainty top against a harsh denim moment helps to convey the casual, “cool girl” vibe that I personally live and die for.

The Sundress

Could I really write an article regarding the modern reimagining of antiquated femininity without including sundresses? Absolutely not. This dainty, (feeling dizzy yet?)  Easter Sunday staple has always carried an unmatched ambiance of femininity, in the most traditional and demeaning understanding of the concept. Don’t believe me, just search “sundress season” in the urban dictionary. But regardless, the feeling of wearing a sundress is almost worth the constant objectification that often ensues.

The Corset

We just love a good body dysmorphia moment, don’t we? But regardless, the inherent beauty of this torture device is unparalleled. It somehow embodies both innocence and sexiness in a perfect paradox. Once again, pairing this dainty (ok I’m done) piece with baggy denim, or even cargo pants gives off the infamous, effortlessly sexy feel that is ironically difficult to achieve.
